| Your car side mirrors are situated where they are to help you see what is behind you, or what is in the process of passing you. They can also, with a little practice, allow you to reverse safely without having to turn your head in an awkward way to see what is behind.
In the case of large tractor-trailers, this is the only way to reverse the vehicle as it's impossible for the driver to see behind any other way. However, with such huge vehicles there are still many blind spots. This is why it is always recommended that the drivers of tractor-trailers have someone on the ground who can see everything to guide them. In general, the larger the vehicle, the more blind area there is. In other words, the available mirrors, both car side mirrors and the rear view mirror, become increasingly less efficient as vehicles get bigger. Increasing the size of the car side mirrors, or using convex mirrors can help the situation to some extent, but these measures can only help so far. While it is fairly minimal, car side mirrors, because they stick out from the side of a car, cause a disturbance in the air flow as a car is driven along a road. This disturbance on both sides causes a certain amount of drag. Drag means that the car must work a little harder, which in turn means that a tiny amount of more fuel is consumed. Please be reassured, however, that the effects are very small indeed. But it's a fact that your car side mirror do increase your gas bill a fraction. However, the safety considerations of having a car side mirror easily outweighs any minimal increase in cost. Besides, it's the law. It's a tragic fact that over 50 children are killed every year by reversing SUV's. The main problem, as mentioned earlier, is that such a big vehicle has a lot of blind spots. However, there is a way to set each side car mirror so that you maximize the area that can be seen behind your vehicle through the mirrors alone. Most car side mirrors are set to see the side of the car. But this means that what is seen through the car side mirror is partly duplicated by what is seen in the rear view mirror. And, as mentioned before, there are blind spots, which can be dangerous. To drastically reduce the blind spots, and increase your useful car side mirror vision, do this: Press your head against the glass on the left door looking forward. Now adjust your left side car mirror until you can just no longer see the side of the car. Now move your head to the center of the car and adjust the right side car mirror until you can just no longer see the right side of the car. Assuming that your rear view mirror is set properly to take in the maximum view from the rear, you will now find that when a car driving behind you disappears from view in the rear view mirror, it will instantly appear in either the right or left side car mirror, depending on from which side it is approaching. This tells you that there are virtually no blind spots behind you. Additionally, when a car overtaking you disappears from view in either of your side car mirrors, it will instantly appear in your peripheral view alongside you. You shouldn't even need to turn your head to confirm it, and if you do, the amount of turn needed will be minimal, and therefore safer. So remember, your car side mirrors are not there for show, so make the most of them! |
